The Thailand Property Guide: Hua-Hin
Hua Hin - Thailand's Original Beach Resort
Renowned for its beautiful beaches, colourful night markets, world class golf courses, stunning hotels and bustling expat social scene, Hua-Hin in Thailand has been a popular holiday destination for both locals and overseas visitors. Despite its old town charm, the little seaside town has international schools and hospitals, large shopping malls, an airport and fantastic restaurants on every corner. It’s no surprise that many people return annually and end up living here.
Lonely Planet has this to say about Hua Hin…
“Thailand’s original beach resort is no palm-fringed castaway island and arguably is the better for it. Instead, Hua Hin (หัวหิน) is a refreshing mix of city and sea with lively markets, good golf courses and water parks, excellent accommodation and an ambience that just keeps getting more hip and cosmopolitan. In fact, many visitors never even step foot on the sand.”

Farangs
Many ex-pats from Europe (especially Scandinavia) and the UK have second homes in Hua Hin and have gone on to retire in the province. Estimates suggest there are 3k-5k expats plus a community of 80k Thais living in Hua Hin. This has made what was a sleepy little fishing village a much busier place with an international flavour. Thai for foreigner is ‘Farang’ and there are ever growing services aimed at the Farang community. These include local foreign language newspapers, international schools, radio stations, local cable TV and internet forums.
By the mid-1920s Hua Hin was a full-fledged resort town for the Bangkok-based nobility
Even Kings Rama VI and VII built summer palaces here. The Thai élite began building second homes in Hua Hin when the railway station was completed in 1923 and later generations began buying condos in the 1990’s.
