Italy's Digital Nomad Visa: Finally, It's Reality

Italy offers its Brexit-busting Nomad Visa to Brits and other globally-minded citizens

Now able to immerse themslves in one of Europe’s most culturally rich countries, how can digital nomads (that’s people who want to work remotely – usually on a laptop) avail themselves of this new visa and what are the eligibility criteria?

What is Italy’s Digital Nomad Visa?

This permits remote workers – both freelancers, collaborators or employees of a company – to live and work in Itlay while maintaining employment with companies based outside the country.

Who is eligible?

Applicants must meet the following requirements to qualify as “highly skilled” for the Digital Nomad Visa:

  • Hold a University Degree (minimum three years), an accredited professional license or a similar post-secondary qualification.
  • Demonstrate a significant amount of professional experience – typically five years, or three years for specialists in information and communication technologies.

Additional criteria include:

  • Proof of capability to work remotely with at least six months experience.
  • An annual income not less than €28,000 – around x3 the minimum required to be exempt from healthcare participation expenses in Italy.
  • A clean criminal record for the past five years
  • Comprehensive health insurance valid throughout Italy for the duration of the stay
  • Documented proof of accommodation in Italy

Benefits and Opportunities

The Digital Nomad Visa offers numerous benefits, including exemption from the usual quota limits and the non-necessity of a separate work permit and the possibility to bring along minor children and spouse. The family members will be issued a visa and a Residence Permit for family members of the same duration as the digital nomad’s Residence Permit.

Moreover, with the support of c_legal & tax, successful applicants will recive a tax code and can request a VAT number, essential for fulfilling fiscal responsibilities in Italy. This is complemented with guidance on social security coverage that aligns with bilateral agreements between Italy and your home country.

Visa Application Process with c_legal & tax

To navigate the application process smoothly, potential applicants must secure an in-person appointment at an Italian Consulate or Embassy in their home country, a process that c_legal & tax can facilitate by ensuring all criteria are met and documents are correctly prepared.

Upon arrival in Italy, c_legal & tax will also assist with the mandatory registration for a residence permit at the local police headquarters “Questura” within eight days of entry. This permit is renewable annually for unlimited times, provided all conditions are maintained. Continous residency in Italy is not required in order to renew the residence permit.

For detailed guidance and a personalised application strategy, reach out to c_legal & tax at www.c-legal.it for a free consultation. Our expertise will ensure that your transition to life in Italy is as smooth and as successful as possible.
