Why do the British Love the Costa Blanca?

From Valencia in the North to Alicante in the South, the sun drenched ‘white coast’ of Costa Blanca has long been one of the most popular holiday destinations for Brits attracting over 5.5 million British tourists a year.

Research by popular property programme A Place in the Sun carried out in 2020, showed that Costa Blanca was also the number one destination for Brits wanting to purchase a home overseas.

With fantastic transport links, incredibly favourable climate, rich cultural heritage and blue flag beaches, the abundance of affordable properties seals the deal when it comes to explaining just why the Brits love the Costa Blanca so much!

It is also important to know that the Costa Blanca is very much a coastline of two distinct halves.

If you head south from Alicante airport (the gateway to the region) you will find a flat, arid landscape with miles of sweeping beaches and plenty of beach front bars. With plenty of watersports from windsurfing to paragliding the south is also home to many top golf courses including internationally famous Villamartin.

The string of resorts known as Orihuela Costa is a very popular choice with ex-pats looking to settle in the area along with Torrevieja and Guardamar. The southern Costa Blanca has arguably the widest choice of property below £200K and has more large-scale new build developments.

By contrast if you travel north from Alicante expect pine-covered hills, hidden coves, and an imposing mountain backdrop. Renowned for its unusual amount of green area unsurprisingly it contains a huge number of national parks. Pretty white villages dot the mountains inland and by the coast you will find harbours and marinas a plenty.

Denia and Javea in the far north are two of the most picturesque towns on the coastline, both lively ports where boating is popular. Around the corner the incredibly pretty resort of Moraira with its sandy coves is also home to the Ifach Golf Club.  Just below Moraira, the larger towns of Calpe and Altea also have much appeal providing everything from prime villas on the seafront to townhouses and apartments spreading up into the hills above.

Heading back towards Alicante, the north Costa Blanca region is perhaps best known for the town of Benidorm. Popular with young and old alike, its vibrant nightlife, shows, theme parks and bars and restaurants running along its incredible beaches ensure its place as one of the best loved resorts in the world.

Although property values in the mountainous northern Costa Blanca attract more of a premium, it is still possible for a limited budget to have a good choice of large apartments in the beach resorts if you are guided by an experienced agent.

With travel now possible once more from the UK to mainland Spain, the Brits love affair with the Costa Blanca shows no sign of fading – and hopefully now you can see why!
